Condo Facing: How to Tell Which Stack Gets West Sun

Condo facing is not one fact for the whole project. Every stack sits at a slightly different position and angle within the same block, so two units marketed under the same project can face completely different directions and get very different sun. The only way to know a specific stack is to check its own orientation, not the project's general facing label.

Reading a condo site plan

A site plan usually shows a north arrow somewhere in a corner, the outline of each block, and a stack number for every column of units running up the building. Start with the north arrow, since everything else on the plan is only meaningful once you know which way is north. From there, trace the outer wall of the specific stack you are looking at and note which way it points relative to that arrow. Block orientation is a separate detail worth checking too, since a block that runs north to south will generally have very different units on its east and west faces compared with a block that runs east to west, even within the same project.

Marketing material sometimes describes an entire block as facing one direction, such as facing the pool or facing the park. That description is usually about the view, not the compass direction the stack's windows actually point toward, and the two are not always the same thing.

Why the same project has very different units

A single condo project can contain blocks running in more than one direction, units on internal versus perimeter stacks, and windows positioned on different sides of the same stack for the living room versus the bedrooms. Two units bought in the same launch, on the same day, from the same project, can end up with meaningfully different sun exposure once you get down to the actual stack and floor. This is the same underlying point covered in our guide to the best facing direction in Singapore, just applied at the level of one project instead of one address in general.

What unblocked means, and why it can mean more west sun

Unblocked in a listing generally means there is no other building directly in front of the unit's main view, so it keeps an open outlook rather than looking into a neighbouring block. That is a real feature for light and view, but it comes with a trade off worth knowing about. An unblocked stack facing west has nothing between it and the low afternoon sun either, so it can end up with more direct west sun than a west facing stack that happens to be partly shaded by another building nearby. Unblocked is a statement about the view, not a guarantee that a unit gets less sun. Our guide to west sun in Singapore covers what that afternoon exposure actually involves.

High floor versus low floor sun

Floor level changes how much of that exposure actually reaches a unit. A high floor unit generally sees more of the sky and fewer obstructions, so it tends to get closer to the full exposure that its facing direction would suggest. A low floor unit in the same stack can be shaded for part of the day by a neighbouring block, a car park, mature trees, or even the boundary wall of the project itself. Two units in the same stack, a few floors apart, can genuinely feel different for this reason alone, on top of whatever the stack's facing direction already suggests.

How to check a specific stack with the Sun Facing Checker

Since facing and sun exposure change from stack to stack within the same project, the most reliable way to know is to check the exact unit rather than relying on a general project description. Search for the condo by name in the Sun Facing Checker, then drop the pin as precisely as you can on the actual block and stack you are considering, since even a short distance across a large site plan can move the pin to a different block. Set the time window to 3pm through 6pm to see the peak afternoon window most people are concerned about, then drag the month slider across the year to see how that exposure shifts month to month. The tool also has floor level and window direction controls, so you can match the check to the specific floor and window you are actually being shown, rather than the project's general orientation.

Facing direction, by geometry alone

Singapore sits close to the equator, at roughly 1.3 degrees north, and the sun rises roughly in the east and sets roughly in the west every day of the year. Around midday the sun tracks north of directly overhead roughly from April to September, and south of directly overhead roughly from October to March, a pattern covered in more depth in our guide to north south facing. The table below sets out what that geometry alone implies for each facing, before any shading from nearby buildings is taken into account, and our guide comparing morning sun versus afternoon sun goes further into why the east and west rows feel so different in practice.

General sun pattern by facing, from geometry alone
FacingMorningAfternoon
NorthGenerally gentle, little direct low sunGenerally gentle; some glancing midday sun roughly April to September when the sun tracks north of overhead
SouthGenerally gentle, little direct low sunGenerally gentle; some glancing midday sun roughly October to March when the sun tracks south of overhead
EastDirect low angle sun from around sunrise into late morningGenerally little direct sun, since the sun has moved to the western half of the sky
WestGenerally little direct sun in the morningDirect low angle sun that builds through the afternoon into early evening, generally the longest and most direct window
North eastDirect morning sun most of the year, generally softer than pure eastGenerally gentle
South westGenerally gentleDirect afternoon sun most of the year, similar in pattern to west

These are general patterns from solar geometry only. A specific stack can still be shaded, partly or fully, by whatever actually sits around it, which is why checking the address itself matters more than the facing label alone.

Frequently asked questions

What does unblocked mean for a condo unit?
Unblocked generally means there is no other building directly in front of the unit's main view, giving it an open outlook. It describes the view, not the amount of sun the unit gets, and an unblocked west facing stack can end up with more direct afternoon sun than a west facing stack that is partly shaded by a neighbouring building.
Does a higher floor always mean more direct sun?
Generally yes, since a high floor unit tends to have fewer obstructions between it and the sky, so it gets closer to the full exposure its facing direction suggests. A low floor unit in the same stack can be shaded for part of the day by a neighbouring block, a car park or trees, even with the identical facing direction.
How do I find out which direction my stack faces before viewing?
Start with the site plan's north arrow and trace the outer wall of your specific stack against it, rather than relying on a general project description. Our broader guide on how to check which direction your house faces covers a few more ways to confirm it, and you can then check the exact sun pattern by entering the address or dropping the pin on the block in the Sun Facing Checker.
Is west facing always the same as pool facing?
No. Pool facing describes the view toward the pool, while west facing describes the compass direction the stack's windows point toward. A stack can be marketed as pool facing while its windows actually face west, south west, or another direction, so it is worth checking the compass direction separately from the view description.
Can I check the exact stack sun before booking a viewing?
Yes. Search the condo by name in the Sun Facing Checker, drop the pin on the specific block and stack, set a time window such as 3pm to 6pm, and drag the month slider to see how the exposure changes across the year before you commit to a viewing slot.
